Prime Foundation help Scouts climb to new heights

Scouts across the Yeovil area now have the opportunity to get involved in another adventurous activity thanks to the support of funding from the Prime Foundation. Although Scouting is known for high adventure and challenging activities, climbing has been something that has not been on offer due to the availability of trained instructors and the provision of the expensive safety equipment needed.

Thanks to the Prime Foundation, West Coker Scout Group now have the kit needed not only to support the 100+ young people aged 6-18yrs within the group but also hundreds of young people across the District too.

Saturday 30th April saw the first outing and usage of the new climbing kit, led by two new group instructors. The new climbing equipment was used at Huishwoods Campsite in Taunton Climbing Tower but can be used on rock face climbs too. This session was provided for Sparkford Explorer Unit (14-18yr olds) as part of a taster introduction session to them into the adventure sport.

A spokesperson for West Coker Scout Group said ‘we are so happy to have this new equipment. It really has enhanced our activity provision, helping the young people to participate in a new physical activities provisions as well as challenging them to try something new; helping to improve personal perseverance, self-belief and self-achievement. Without the generous support from the Prime Foundation we would never have been able to afford this equipment or provide this activity to our young members’.

Now the equipment is in use, West Coker Scout Group volunteers aims to get it used as much as possible, increasing the number of volunteer instructors but also helping more young people locally to access and benefit from the opportunity of trying out the adventure sport of climbing. #Skill4life
